Allows studio time to finish 'Ironman 3' , 'Thor: The Dark World' and 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier'

From left, 'Avengers' stars Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr. and a CGI version of Mark Ruffalo will return for a second round.
Moviegoers now know what they’re doing on May 1, 2015.
Marvel Studios announced Thursday the release date for the sequel to this year’s box office champ, “The Avengers.”
Though it may seem like an eternity to comic book geeks, the wide berth gives the studio time to complete “Ironman 3” and “Thor: The Dark World” for next year and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” for the summer of 2014.

The studio had confirmed this month that director Joss Whedon would be back to write and direct the sequel to the superhero team blockbuster that made $1.46 billion at the box office worldwide.
“The Avengers” is the third-highest-grossing film of all time, behind only “Avatar” and “Titanic.”

The sequel is expected to reunite Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, Chris Evans’ Captain America, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow and Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye for another round of planet-saving heroics.
Eagle-eyed comic readers recognized the cameo of Thanos, a cosmically powerful baddie, at the end of the closing credits of the first film.
Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, however, told the Daily News in April that he wasn’t interested in topping the scale of “The Avengers.”
“Even thinking about Avengers 2, it’s not about, ‘It’s got to be louder, it’s got to be busier, it’s got to be shinier,’ ’” he said at the time.
“We want everything to try to be better, but that doesn’t necessarily mean bigger.”

Johansson will have some time to wedge herself back in her Black Widow costume: the 'Avengers' sequel won't hit theaters until May 1, 2013.
